Michael Kalish is an internationally acclaimed sculptor and mixed-media artist based in Los Angeles, California. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Kalish is recognized for his exploration of the relationships between material, dimension, space, and visual perception.
Kalish’s signature multidimensional sculptures are constructed from layers of precisely laser-cut aluminum. Presented as both wall-mounted and freestanding works, these compositions extend into the viewer’s physical space and continually change according to position and perspective. The wall-mounted sculptures project outward from the surface, while the freestanding works invite viewers to move around and experience them from multiple angles.
From most viewpoints, the layered elements appear abstract and fragmented. As the viewer moves, however, lines intersect, colors shift, and shadows change until, at one precise vantage point, the individual layers align and the complete image comes into focus. Through this transformation, Kalish turns viewing into an active experience of movement, discovery, and participation.
Kalish’s work has been exhibited internationally and is held in prominent museum, corporate, public, and private collections, including the Ford Motor Company, Coca-Cola Corporation, Tampa Museum of Art, and Pratt Sculpture Garden. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Time, Art in America, ARTnews, People, and Wired, as well as on CBS Sunday Morning and CNN.
